Tips for building a bond with your mini pig

Building a bond with your mini pig takes patience, consistency, and understanding the world from their perspective. Mini pigs are extremely lovable and build a very deep bond with their humans, but if you’re expecting them to act like a golden retriever on day one, you might be in for disappointment.

Here are some tips for winning over your new friend and becoming their favorite human.

Talk to them

Mini pigs are very sensitive to tone. They might not understand your words, but they definitely understand your “vibe.”

  • Soft tones: Use a calm, high-pitched, or soothing voice.

  • Consistency: Use their name often. Soon, they will realize that the sound of their name usually leads to attention or a snack.

Sit with them

Mini pigs LOVE food. Use this to your advantage during the bonding phase, but try to keep it to healthy treats if possible.

In the beginning, your mini pig might be nervous or standoff-ish. They are prey animals by nature so they are very cautious in situations they aren’t comfortable in or familiar with. It’s really important to do things at your mini pig’s speed and comfort level to build trust slowly. Instead of chasing your mini pig, which makes them more nervous and uncomfortable, sit on the ground and let them decide to approach you.

Brush and scratch them

Once your mini pig trusts you enough to hang out near you, scratches and brushing are an excellent way to build the bond even more.

Start low and slow. Use firm, rhythmic scratches on their flank or belly. Don’t go right for their head as that can make them nervous!

If you can’t get close enough to them yet, an excellent tool is an extendable back scratcher to give enough space for them to feel comfortable, but also give them scratches to show them you are a safe friend!

If your mini pig likes the scratches eventually they will even flop down on their side for belly rubs. This is a big win for you both, as it isn’t just a massage, it’s a sign of trust! A mini pig that flops for you is showing that they feel safe enough to be vulnerable in your presence.

Teach them simple tricks

Because mini pigs are so intelligent, they really enjoy learning. Teaching your mini pig simple tricks like “sit,” “spin,” or “come” is a fantastic way to bond. It provides mental stimulation and gives you a structured way to interact that builds mutual respect.

Never use physical punishment with a mini pig. They have long memories and a grudge can set your bonding progress back by weeks! Positive reinforcement is the only way to go.

Each mini pig has a unique personality. The most important ingredients of building trust with your mini pig are time and consistency. Some will be your best friend in two days, others may take months to fully come out of their shell. Don’t rush it. The bond you form with a mini pig is so rewarding! Once you’ve earned their trust, you have a loyal companion for life.
