When choosing the best bedding for your mini pig it is important to use straw, never hay. Many people don’t realize there is a difference, but it is the biggest factor for whether your mini pig is warm and cozy, or cold and uncomfortable.
Straw consists of the dry stalks left over after grain (like wheat, oats, or barley) has been harvested. Because the grain is gone, straw is hollow and contains very little nutritional value.
- Superior insulation: The hollow stems of straw trap air, making it an incredible insulator. In the winter, a mini pig can burrow deep into a thick pile of straw to maintain body heat.
- Low moisture retention: Straw doesn’t soak up moisture as quickly as hay. This helps keep the “nest” dry and prevents the pig from getting chilled by damp bedding.
- Encourages natural behavior: Mini pigs love to “fluff” their beds. Straw provides the structure they need to build a cozy, high-walled nest.
- Cost-effective: Generally, straw is cheaper than high-quality hay because it is considered a byproduct.
Hay is made of dried grasses (like Timothy, Orchard, or Alfalfa) that are harvested specifically for animal feed. It is dense, green, and full of nutrients.
- High palatability: Pigs will eat hay. While extra fiber is good, using hay as bedding means your mini pig is essentially sleeping on—and then eating—their “toilet” area if they have accidents.
- Poor insulation: Hay is solid, not hollow. It lacks the air-trapping properties of straw, meaning it won’t keep a mini pig nearly as warm during cold snaps.
Mold and dust risk: Hay holds onto moisture. If it gets damp from rain or urine, it can mold quickly, leading to respiratory issues for your mini pig.
